Dr Cameron Downes is a Cairns local who completed an undergraduate degree in Medical Science, through Queensland University of Technology in 1999. He moved to Townsville to study Medicine at James Cook University, graduating in 2005. He has gone on to work in various hospitals around Queensland.
In 2015 he was awarded his Fellowship in Orthopaedics, through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Further subspecialty training in Spinal surgery was undertaken at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, under the supervision of internationally recognised spinal surgeons. Following his training Dr Downes was appointed a locum in both the Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery departments as a consultant spinal surgeon.
Dr Downes returned to Cairns in 2017 with his young family. He is an Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon who also maintains a general orthopaedic interest. His commitments remain both in public and private sectors, as well as being actively involved in the training of James Cook University medical students and Orthopaedic Training Registrars.
Dr Downes’ spinal practice encompasses the management of cervical, thoracic and lumbar conditions including: disc protrusions, radiculopathies, degenerative disc disease, spinal deformities, trauma, infections, and tumour. He incorporates the latest minimally invasive and open surgical techniques into his practice.
Dr Downes enjoys fishing and spending time with his young family when he is not working.
